Japanese
Bronze Vase
Bronze ovoid form
vase with a flared scalloped top and a two handles in the shape of
mythological animals. It has high relief images of birds and
impressed designs on the neck. The body of the vase has four
panels of applied branches, flowers and birds. The base is
decorated with a design of scrolling leaves..

Japanese
Bronze Jardinière'
Japanese bronze champleve jardinière with Chinese style designs and mythological elephant head &
trunk handles. This is a quality piece, with heavy casting throughout.
There are four bands 7" long by 1 7/8" wide depicting the T'ao-T'ieh
mask above ten archaic shields. It contains a variety of colored enamel,
including two shades of blue, green, red, and white. The bottom of
the interior has an interesting design of leafs in relief that is
typical of Japanese bronzes.

Chinese Bronze Incense
Burner
Early Chinese bronze
incense burner with a foo lion on lid, which has a pierced-type ball
under right foot. The burner is supported on four feet shaped legs, with foo lion
heads
on the upper portion. Archaic style and casting are indicative
of age. It has the
T'ao-T'ieh
mask design on the lower body.

Condition: Shows age, and has chips missing from the front left and back
corner. There are three small holes in the base with two minor rectangular holes on
the side for the smoke to emerge.

Japanese Bronze of Man in Seated Position
Unusual Japanese solid bronze sculpture of a seated man holding a
pipe in one hand and a pot with fire in the other hand. This bronze
has excellent detailing, including the facial features, hair on head,
slippers on feet, the tobacco pouch and the manju on the left side of the
figure’s back.

Condition:
The bronze is
in excellent condition, with some wear to the brown color on the
bronze that gives it a soft patina. There are some
rub marks on the bottom of the bronze, and a small spot
or stain that does not detract from the appearance of the bronze
(since it is on the bottom).

Chinese Bronze, Kylin Shaped Censer
Chinese finely detailed bronze Kylin censer. This is a
heavy cast bronze in the style of the Ming Dynasty, and has a working hinged
cover in the
form of a standing horned Kylin. It is wearing a collar with a bell
and two tassels. It has an open mouth with a fierce
expression.
The lid is worked into the animal’s head, the vessel into its body
that is
supported on four legs with claws. The claws are clutching
a snake that is coiled up the left rear leg with it's tail up the right rear
leg. The overall body is decorated with a variety of archaic designs. This is a quadruped
(four legged animal) bronze,
which
occurred as early as the Chou Dynasty. There are no maker or date marks,
but this is obviously an old bronze.

Condition: Overall excellent
except for minor surface scratches on one ear and over one eyebrow.

Japanese Statue of Bijin
Japanese metal casting of a Bijin with a dark brown
bronze patina holding a
sickle in
one hand and carrying a finely detailed woven basket on her back.
She is wearing typical Japanese peasant costume that is
representative of the early farming culture.

Bronze Temple Guardian Lion - Thailand
Bronzed
Thai temple lion with remnants of the original gold/gilt patina. The lion is hollow cast,
and stands on four
five-toed paws. Some of the original gold
gilt has been lost over the years, and there is a lot of green patina from
the aging process. This lion was done in the image of Thai Buddhist temple
lions which stand guard at the entrances to the revered Thai temple known as the Wat Phra Kaew (the first permanent structure built in Bangkok by King Rama I in
1782). The design is a Thai variation of earlier stone "guardian
lions" found in the Khmer region of Cambodia. This lion has the Thai design
on its chest plate in the style of the Khmer stone lions. The flame
style mane frames the face with the mouth bearing fierce teeth. There are many designs around the chest and ankle
going up to the back.

Condition: Some of
the gold leafing is missing from the body of the Lion in numerous places, and here is some corrosion and green patina over much of the bronze. There are no other breaks, cracks
or missing pieces. There is also some old residue of dirt under the legs
and feet that indicates the piece may have been buried at one time. No
restoration.

Japanese White Brass Mirror
Early Japanese white brass circular mirror
with a background of finely stippled designs and representations
including
a fly whisk, drum, purse, hat and other items on
the front, with a signature and a raised edge. The back is a polished mirror
with usual signs of wear.

Indian Bronze Statue of Ganesha
Impressive bronze casting of Ganesha,
representing the elephant deity, shown standing and holding a round scroll,
three edged sword and cylinder. The statue is finely detailed with
aged appearance and some discoloration. The figure is heavy bronze
cast over a hard brown
cement-like material. There is a small piece on the back hip
where the cement substance shows along with green aging of the
bronze. This archaic piece was acquired as part of a large
collection of bronzes, including Buddha images, that was brought
back from southeast Asia during the early 1960's. Additional
information can be provided upon request.

Chinese Bronze Elephant with Altar
Candleholder
Chinese bronze casting of a mythological elephant
with a vase on its back that appears to
have been used as an altar candleholder. The front of the
bronze has
remnants of the old red lacquer finish, and there is writing on the side of
the casting. The elephant appears to be singed on the front from burning incense
or wax.
